Building Energy and Stamina - A Health Coaching Success Story
Patricia, a recently retired State Health Plan member from Greensboro, desired more energy and endurance for an active retiree lifestyle. Patricia wanted to build stamina for gardening, yard work and chores. She decided to give the NC HealthSmart health coaching program a try.
When Patricia started working with her health coach, she was only walking a little over a mile "on occasion" to her neighborhood shopping center and back. With the support of her health coach over 10 weeks, Patricia increased her walking to 40 minutes up to five times per week. She also added strength training twice weekly with sit-ups, push-ups, bicep curls and stretches.
Patricia's muscle and bone strength improved, and she saw a small weight gain to bring her Body Mass Index to a healthier level. Patricia, who did not change eating habits, links her better Body Mass Index to higher muscle mass. She also reports higher endurance for home and leisure activities.
"I just want to thank you for that extra motivation to get up and get going," Patricia says of her health coach. "Now that I'm up and moving, I think I can continue on my own and do things like join a gym and start Zumba class, now that I feel like I can keep up with other people there! I couldn't have done this without you."
